Cervical Cancer Survivor Story | Diagnosis After HPV Test

Tricia

Location: Connecticut

Age at diagnosis: 33

Diagnosis: Adenocarcinoma in situ

Stage of cancer: Not applicable

When my life changed:  It seemed as if life was moving along just as it should be, and then one day, it all changed. I was 33 years old, with a terrific husband, and 2 beautiful children; except now, I had cervical cancer. I was healthy, fit, had two easy pregnancies and never a gynecological issue. How could this be?

How I was diagnosed: After a routine Pap, the doctor discovered I had HPV. A complete shock, he wanted to do a colposcopy. And then the phone call came…adenocarcinoma in situ.

My diagnosis: Adenocarcinoma in situ

What happened next: Lots of research, talking, crying, stressing, reflecting, regretting and more crying. I had never missed an OBGYN appointment, don’t smoke and there’s no family history. It just didn’t make sense and it never will. It doesn’t have to.

My treatment: I had a cone biopsy and hysterectomy.

Life beyond cancer: I once read that you never know how strong you are until being strong is your only option. Strength comes in many forms once you have faced a disease like cancer. I have found strength alone and in the presence of others. I hope that each new day, I will grow stronger and embrace the life I have been given. Cancer changed my life, but did not end it. I try to focus on the blessings all around me and never take them for granted. I do not know what tomorrow will bring, but I do know how to take what I have learned and lost to make it the best that I can.
