Marybeth

Cancerversary: January

Age at diagnosis: 46

Diagnosis: Adenocarcinoma in situ

Stage of cancer: IB2

How my story begins: I went for a regular Pap test thinking it would be ok just like all my others in the past. My doctor said they found abnormal cells. I was diagnosed with the HPV virus at that time and was told that it was the strand that was at high risk for developing into cervical cancer. They wanted to send me for more tests. I was reassured that I did not have cancer and everything would be ok. After a second test and a cone biopsy, I was diagnosed with cervical cancer stage 1B2. From Pap to diagnosis to being declared cancer free was literally a few short months.

Life before my diagnosis: I was carefree. I loved life.

How I felt after diagnosis: I felt dirty, scared, and defeated.

Telling my family and friends: My family was very supportive and understanding, as were friends. They were concerned but did not pry, as I am a fairly private person.

My treatment: It was decided that a radical hysterectomy was the right treatment for me.

How I felt after treatment: After treatment, I felt like a weight has been lifted but also felt like I got kicked in the stomach.

What was most difficult for me: Coming to terms with the "C" word and knowing that it could have been prevented.

What I did to help myself: I prayed all day, everyday, and asked that friends and family pray as well for physician guidance and wisdom.

My life after cancer: As I write this in January 2020, it has been not quite four weeks since my radical hysterectomy. I am still healing mentally and physically.

Where I am today: I am thankful for each day and grateful that the cancer was caught early and treated.

What I want other women to know: I want women to know how important Pap tests are and that the HPV vaccine is available.

How I will try to help others: I will get the word out how important pap tests are and about the importance of self care.
